Dance Hall Rock
Description
There are a lot of places in southern Utah where you expect to find hikers.
There are places where you expect to find rock climbers, canyoneers, photographers and people who have driven 40 miles down a dirt and gravel road just to see what is at the end.
But a dance floor? In the middle of the desert? Yep. Welcome to Dance Hall Rock.
About 36.5 miles down Hole-in-the-Rock Road from Highway 12, a giant sandstone formation rises out of the desert. Inside is a natural sandstone amphitheater with a relatively smooth floor and surprisingly good acoustics. In 1879–1880, it became a gathering place for Mormon pioneers making the journey along the Hole-in-the-Rock Trail.
The hike is more of a short walk that takes you right into the amphitheater. Clap your hands, sing or call out. Enjoy the unique natural acoustics. This is an unusual stop with a unique story behind it.
