Batty Pass Caves
Description
Batty Pass Caves has been a point of interest on the map when we have visited Escalante in the past. However, I did not have the equivalent interest in walking in on the OHV road to get to the caves. While the caves were interesting, I am not sure that walking that distance would be worthwhile.
The three caves are actually man made by two brothers. You can go in each one. They contain remants of a boat, shelves, old bed springs and frame, and more. It is crazy to picture people living there. The remote nature of this location would make it very hard work to make this a home. I admired the handiwork of the cave construction and the doors that are still there.
Be sure to check out the very old and bullet riddled car right before the caves, you don’t see that everyday!

Difficulty: Moderate if you walk all the way in, easy if you can drive right there.
Trail Stats: This one varies. If you have to walk in from Hole in the Rock road, plan for a 4.8 mile out and back slog without much varying scenery, elevation gain is 236 feet. If you can drive to the caves, it is 0.1 miles, out and back, 7 feet of elevation gain.
Trail Finding: Depends. Did you drive all the way in? If so, step out of your vehicle and the caves are right around the corner. If you have to drive or walk in from Hole in the Rock road, there are a few splits that a map would be helpful to find your way.
Conditions: If you can make it right to the caves, it is packed rock and easy to walk on.
Would I Repeat This: Probably not, but I am glad we saw it.
Let’s Do This
Parking: Unofficial parking is present near the caves.
Timing: Take extra caution with travel down Hole in the Rock Road if rain is forecasted, the road easily and frequently floods and can become impassable.
Downloaded Map: Helpful at the splits for the road going in.
