Wilderness Survival Kits
Description
Recently, The Desert Rat hosted a Wilderness Survival Skills course. The presenter, Keith Farrar, shared invaluable information on a multitude of outdoor survival topics.
What we put into action immediately, was building our Wilderness Survival Kit. We frequently find ourselves in remote and rugged locations. No one plans to have an unexpected overnight in the outdoors. If you did plan it, you are equipped with all the comforts you may need. If you don’t plan it, having this small kit could be a literal life saver.
We already carry basic first aid items, a Buff, Garmin In-Reach, Hand Sanitizer, and more. After taking Keith’s course, we have now added many of the materials he outlines on his website. This includes, but is not limited to, materials to create shelter, purify water, signaling methods, compass, multiple modes for starting a fire, and more. The items shown above are enough to create two pouches of materials, less the camp fuel and stove, which will be in just one of the pouches if we are traveling together.
Think about outfitting yourself with the materials that would help you to get through an unexpected prolonged period outside. It was quick and easy to do, especially considering how important this may come in handy.
