La Cangreja
Description
The La Cangreja was the sweatiest I have probably ever been. This end of May hike was the pure definition of humid. Taking the humidity, mileage, and elevation gain into consideration, you must be prepared for the exertion of this hike.
This hike immediately begins climbing. You have a short stretch along a fenced pasture-like area. After that, enter the rainforest! You are surrounding by endless vegetation. The trees have really cool vines that wrap and twist and create supernatural statues reminiscent of the series Stranger Things. Insect buzz, birds make eerie calls and then another will make a cheerful chirp. The absolute neatest part is being serenaded by the echoing calls of Howler monkeys and also seeing White Faced Capuchin monkeys. Watch for rustling leaves, that is how we spotted the first few. Getting to view these agile creatures in their nature tree habitats was incredible special. Take caution as you hike, there are many roots, some slippery, that are slipping or tripping hazards.
Eventually, you will come to a more arid section. You can see far into the distance and the trails are lined with humongous yucca-like plants. You then will drop elevation quickly. Keep your eyes peeled for snake, we had a slithery green guy cross the path in front of us, as well as a blue Morpho butterfly!
Finally, the La Cangreja waterfall can be seen. There is something so majestic about the sight of a cascading barrage of water, the sound, the force, the splash, the mist. The water is cool and absolutely refreshing. Take a good rest, because the hike is just as much work on the way back!

Let’s Do This
Parking: Present.
Timing: Wow, this was a hot and humid trail. There is shade throughout a good portion of the trail, though there is some exposure to the direct sun.
Downloaded Map: This was helpful, it was consulted for ‘how much longer’ and also checking for elevation changes.
Fees: You must pay an advance entrance fee to enter the Rincon de la Vieja National Park. Purchase your tickets at the link below.
Also, you may pass through private land on the drive there, we paid roughly $4 at their gate to pass through to get to the park.
Nearby Fun
Trails: Las Pailas and Catarata Escondidas. Rio Negro Hot Springs is nearby, admission required and is separate from the national park.
