Canyoneering Canyon 3
Description
We are spreading our wings and venturing into canyoneering. Although that seems like an oxymoron to suggest we are flying since we are actually learning to descend in a crazy way.
We wanted to share our latest experience. Since doing this requires specialized equipment and expertise, we will not share the exact location. We don’t want to suggest this should be done without the proper preparation or skill set. What we do want to do is show you the exciting and thrilling options that are available to you if you are willing to get your feet off the trail, put them on a rock wall or be willing to let them dangle as you hang from a rope.
This experience was incredible. The hike in was a welcomed work out, substantial elevation gain before we dropped into the canyon. The views went on for days, you can see all the way to Quail Creek and Sand Hollow Reservoirs.
Once the workout was done, the harnesses went on and the rappelling began. We were so fortunate to go with a group of extremely competent, confident, and skilled canyoneers. We had multiple rappels, the longest were two 120+ feet. Going over that ledge to start the rappel still messes with my mind, but once I get going, my confidence is improving and the fun begins. Setting my feet on the ground and looking up at what I descended give me a rush a sense of accomplishment, feeling strong and proud of doing something new and intimidating in my 40s.
