Las Pailas Loop
Description
The Las Pailas loop in Rincon de la Vieja National Park was our first hike in Costa Rica. We completed the loop counterclockwise. Initially, you pass through some forest and quickly emerge into a very arid, volcanic section. There are several offshoot spurs to see mud pots and other steam vents. We had just been to Yellowstone National Park a few months ago, so these features were not as impressive as they may have been if we hadn’t seen so many recently.
For us, the highlight of the hike was the second half. Going through the rainforest was so cool for this nature nerd. We saw a variety of butterflies, lizards, birds, insects, and foliage, some of which we had never seen before. There were huge trees with creeping vines with bird and insects creating a jungle soundtrack as we hiked.
