Antelope Canyon via Paddle Route
Description
We recently explored Antelope Canyon via the kayak route. Starting at Antelope Point boat launch, you can trade the crowds, boat traffic, and noise of the marina for a quieter adventure into the winding sandstone walls of Antelope Canyon. The combination of kayaking across the brilliant blue water of Lake Powell and getting out for a short hike into the canyon makes for an outing that feels much bigger than the miles you actually cover.
You are initially kayaking in the large open “main channel” of Lake Powell. Don’t think this will be a leisure trip. There are constant waves, in particular on the way back from the canyon when you are headed upstream. It was a good arm workout to paddle. Once you enter the canyon, the water is quiet, calm, and was glass-smooth for us. Coming from background of recreating on the Mississippi River, I was surprised how clear the water was and how deep we could see. I was also surprised, and saddened, to see where the past water levels had been and how much the lake depth as dropped.
Paddle into the canyon until you reach where you can beach your kayak. There is no where to turn, there is no way to get lost once you are in the canyon. The hike starts as soon as you get into the canyon, with impressive undulations and some narrow sections that are irresistible to seeing if you can bridge your body between them. You can walk back as far as you like, with the hike eventually terminating at a large rock blockade.
This experience is part paddling adventure, part desert exploration, and a pretty spectacular way to spend some hours on Lake Powell
