Canyoneering Canyon 5
Description
Canyoneering Canyon 5. We recently posted about the hike to Water Canyon. If you have the skills and knowledge and want a full day canyoneer adventure, keep on hiking and check out the rappels on this canyon.
Disclaimer: Completing this canyon requires specialized equipment and expertise, please do not attempt without the training. We don’t want to suggest this should be done without the proper preparation or skill set. What we do want to do is show you the exciting and thrilling options that are available to you if you are willing to get your feet off the trail, put them on a rock wall or be willing to let them dangle as you hang from a rope.
I am not sure why I thought I would have to pick one or the other when it came to transitioning into more canyoneering and not as much hiking. Let me tell you, this is not the case! The last two approaches we have done, including this one, have been intense and grueling. According to my tracked activity, our day in this canyon was 7 miles, 3,120 feet of elevation gain, and was over five hours of activity. I am not sure if the elevation gain is accurate, it seems to be looking at the topo map, but either way it sure felt like this much on the way up!
You will get to enjoy the ‘regular’ Water Canyon trail, then you continue up, up, up, up, and then up some more until you are at the very top of the Zion-esk rock formations. Have your beta ready because once you get to the top, you get to start rappelling to get to the bottom. We had our first rappels that went directly into water, some teamwork for getting through a water filled pothole and also STEMing a very tricky section. As newbies, we also had our PR for longest rap at 158 feet. It was a thrilling and exciting day!
