Precipice to Sidewinder
Description
Precipice to Sidewinder was an unexpected delight of a trail. We wanted to complete a longer trail that was close to our home and my mountain biker spouse suggested this one.
We drove up to the Cove Wash Trailhead and set out. You immediately wind back into the hills of the Santa Clara River Reserve. You will be able to see some huge specimens of barrel cactus. There are overlooks all over the place. It was surprising how far away it felt like we had travelled with how grand of views we were able to have.
As you hike, picture that this is primarily used as a bike trail. It definitely takes a lot of skill to successfully bike this trail!

Difficulty: Moderate.
Trail Stats: Precipice, Sidewinder, and Serpentine are listed as a combined balloon trail. AllTrails lists it as 9.9 miles, 1,407 feet elevation gain. We completed 4.8 miles by taking Precipice to Sidewinder, going to the overlook and skipping the turn off for Serpentine.
Trail Finding: Relatively easy.
Conditions: Packed and loose rock, some large rocks present, short stretches of packed dirt.
Would I Repeat This: Yes, it was great!
Let’s Do This
Parking: Parking lot present at Cove Wash Trailhead.
Timing: There is no shade on this trail. Keep this in mind for the direct sun exposure, in particular in the hot summer months.
Downloaded Map: Helpful at the trail splits.
Fees: None
Nearby Fun
Trails: Black Brush, Tempi’po’op, and more. There is a phenomenal network of technical mountain bike trails that start from this same trailhead parking lot, which you can also hike
